Digital Drawing Setup: Hardware and Software
Choosing a tablet, an app and configuring them well.
Digital drawing uses the same fundamentals as traditional drawing, with powerful extras: undo, layers, infinite colors and easy sharing. Choosing the right hardware and configuring it well makes a big difference in how natural it feels.
Hardware: three options
- Pen tablet (no screen): you draw on a pad and look at your monitor. Cheap, durable and ergonomic (you keep your head up). There's a short adjustment period for the hand–eye disconnect, usually a week or two.
- Pen display: a screen you draw directly on, connected to a computer. Feels like paper, more expensive.
- Tablet computer with stylus (like iPad with Apple Pencil, or Android tablets and Windows 2-in-1s with active pens): portable, all-in-one, excellent drawing apps.
Software
| Software | Platform | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Krita | Windows, Mac, Linux | Free and open source, great brushes, made for painting |
| Procreate | iPad | Affordable, intuitive, very popular for illustration |
| Clip Studio Paint | All major platforms | Excellent for comics, manga and line art |
| Photoshop | Windows, Mac, iPad | Industry standard in concept art and many studios |
| Affinity Photo / Designer | Windows, Mac, iPad | One-time purchase alternatives |
| Ibis Paint, MediBang | Mobile | Free options for phones and tablets |
The software matters less than the fundamentals. Pick one and learn it well.
Configure for comfort
- Pressure curve: adjust it in the tablet driver or app so light and heavy strokes feel natural for your hand.
- Shortcuts: learn the essentials (brush, eraser, undo, zoom, rotate canvas, color picker). Map the pen's buttons to undo and the color picker.
- Canvas size and resolution: for print, work at 300 DPI at the final size; for screen, a canvas of 3000–4000 px on the long side is a comfortable default.
- Rotate and flip the canvas freely, just like you rotate paper. Flipping horizontally reveals proportion mistakes (as in how to practice).
- Ergonomics: keep the tablet aligned with your arm, sit upright and take breaks.
Color management basics
Screens vary in brightness and color. A calibrated monitor (or at least a decent sRGB screen at medium brightness) helps your colors look the same on other devices. Always check your values in grayscale.
Try the sketchpad in your browser with a mouse, finger or stylus:

Exercise 1
Set up and warm up
Install a drawing app (Krita is free). Set up a pressure curve and shortcuts. Then do the line and ellipse warm-ups from the lines module digitally, without using undo.
Exercise 2
Traditional to digital
Draw the same simple still life twice: once on paper, once digitally. Note what feels different and what stays the same.
